🍂 About the Exhibition
Landscape is by no means a new genre in art. Like the seasons themselves, however, its appearance has continually changed. Artists have interpreted the landscape through countless forms, colors, and perspectives. This series of exhibitions explores the wonders of the seasons as seen through artists’ eyes.
In the 17th-century Netherlands, landscape moved out of the background of painting and became a serious subject in its own right. The accompanying emphasis on close observation marked an important shift in art, as artists increasingly prioritized sensory experience over idealized subjects and narrative scenes.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Romanticism transformed this interest in nature. Colors became more vibrant, while forms and subjects sometimes dissolved into atmospheric haze. The work of J. M. W. Turner helped define a movement toward the impressions of light and atmosphere later explored by French artists, including Claude Monet in his 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise.
The artworks in this exhibition were selected from The Art Center’s Permanent Collection for their depictions of fall. A season of vivid color and transformation, fall marks the passage of time and evokes the fleeting nature of life.
