About the Exhibition

This exhibition brings together Jac Kephart’s early pastel works and his later abstract paintings. The works were selected for their similarity in color, shape, or form. Each grouping illustrates the relationship between his two seemingly distinct working methods.

When shown alongside one another, it is impossible not to notice the similarities between Kephart’s early works and those of his abstract phase. This exhibition was curated as a means of drawing those connections between different phases of the artist’s career—not by placing them in contrast but by acknowledging their similarities.

Examples of these connections are numerous. Strong horizontal lines in his abstract work correlate to the horizon line in the landscapes and seascapes, while pillaring vertical lines tower like the mast of a sailboat. A small color square placed along the horizontal axis gives scale and depth, as do objects in the distance such as a tree or small cabin.
