In October, we will research our Permanent Collection once more to find treasures from the genre of abstraction.  Many of our viewers may have noticed that in recent years our permanent collection exhibits have opened up and now have invited other artists from around the region working in a similar vain to show along side our most treasured acquisitions.  This component of including work being done right now by a wide range of artists and integrating these works into the galleries keeps our permanent collection in a timely conversation with what is going on today.  Staff, viewers and collectors get to see what has changed and what has not in media, artistic preoccupation and from generation to generation.  Some of the work that will be viewed will come from the traditions of plein air painting, nightclub drawings, intricate hard edge pattern works, mysterious nocturnal collage works, interactive puzzle works, and clay forms taking on characteristics of nature and upholstery.

This exhibit will house clay works by Jake Allee, Sam Meadows, Molly Peacock, and Sara Ransford.  Painting will be represented by Alex Blau, Matt Rossman, Freya Hite, Bob Martin ,Lisa,  Diana Woods, and Jennifer Woods.

Permanent Collection artists TBA.

The Art Center will feature a Second Saturday event
Saturday, October 9, 2-4pm.

Abstract Art Movement, Gallery Tour & Discussion

At this event we will explore the markers of the abstract art movement through a film of the life and work of  Wassily Kandinsky who is noted often as the artist that started the abstract movement in 1910 with his non-figurative work. We will then tour The Art Center’s exhibit “What? What?” a display of abstract work from the permanent collection and have a discussion.

Second Saturdays spotlight artists, artistic disciplines and movements throughout history as well as the literary arts.

This event is sponsored by Gerson Investment Management and is free and open to the public.
For more information, or to see what our September Second Saturday event is, visit the News page.

The Rocky Mountain Collage Society is happy to present its Biennial Members' Show in the Gould Gallery at The Art Center October 1 through November 13.   Although the show is non-juried, Roger McCoy, a professor of art at Mesa State College, will serve as the juror of awards.

The Rocky Mountain Collage Society was formed in 2007 by a dedicated group of students of collage.  The organization's mission is to promote collage and assemblage as fine art forms and to increase learning and support of collage throughout the Rocky Mountain region.  Although most of its members currently are in Mesa County, the organization hopes to draw members from the Front Range as well as other western states.  It is affiliated with the National Collage Society.  Members meet every other month from September to May, usually at The Art Center, to tackle collage challenges and attend critiques and demonstrations.  The first RMCS members' show was held at the former Johnson Art Gallery at Mesa State College in 2008.  Members of the organization have also shown their work at Frame Works, Barnes and Noble, City Hall, the Creamery in Hotchkiss and other local venues.

In 2009, RMCS was instrumental in bringing the National Collage Society's Annual Postcard Show to Grand Junction here at The Art Center.  It also co-hosted two very well received workshops by the world renown collage artist, Jonathan Talbot, at Mesa State College this past Spring.

If you would like further information about the Rocky Mountain Collage Society and its members, please visit their website at rockymountaincollagesociety.org.  There you can find information about how to join the group and download a prospectus for the October show.  The deadline for pre-registration for the show is September 15, 2010.
