Sumi-e: Brush Painting and Beyond

The
students will learn about Japanese
traditional painting in this course and
study basic brush strokes and techniques
using bamboo brushes, sumi-ink and oriental
paper through practicing calligraphy, and
basic painting subjects for beginners.
For more advanced students, different
subjects will be provided.
Furthermore, the instructor will introduce
her own media called "nihonga" that has not
yet been introduced to a wide audience in
the United States. The students will
learn about special dry pigments called
Iwa-enogu and Suhi-engu (made of minerals
and other natural things), the glue called
nikawa (made of animal skin and bone) and
much more. This is an opportunity to
experiment with new techniques, mediums and
tools while exploring your own vision in art
making.
